Here are 4 Nigerian foods that often confuse foreigners at first bite but we love them:
1. Fufu
Many foreigners expect it to be chewed like dough or bread, but Nigerians usually swallow small portions with soup.
The texture can be surprising if you’ve never had a “swallow” before.
2. Isi Ewu
This spicy goat-head dish is considered a delicacy, especially in southeastern Nigeria.
Foreigners are often shocked by the presentation and the fact that nearly every part of the head is eaten.
3. Okra Soup
The slippery texture is the biggest culture shock. Some people love it instantly; others can’t get past the “draw” consistency.
4. Stockfish
Its strong smell and very tough texture can be intense for first-timers, but it adds deep flavor to soups like egusi and ogbono.
A lot of these foods become favorites once people understand how they’re meant to be eaten.
Be honest 😂
If your foreign friend sees Isi Ewu, Okra Soup and Fufu together for one table… which one go make am run first? 😂😂😂
