For decades, hyenas have been portrayed as scavengers, thieves, and cowards.

The truth is far more impressive.

A spotted hyena possesses one of the most powerful bite forces of any land predator relative to its size. Their jaws are so strong that they can crush large bones into fragments and digest nearly every part of a carcass, including the bone itself.

While lions often get the spotlight, hyenas are highly intelligent hunters that live in complex social groups called clans. Some clans can contain more than 80 members and are led by dominant females.

Researchers have discovered that hyenas can recognize social rank, remember relationships between clan members, and solve problems that many other predators struggle with.

They are not merely scavengers.

In many regions of Africa, hyenas make the majority of their own kills and are among the continent’s most successful predators.

Nature gave them powerful jaws.

Evolution gave them remarkable intelligence.

Together, those traits made the spotted hyena one of Africa’s most feared survivors.
