Lintels are beams built over window and door spaces. They help to prevent the extra block-works over these spaces from collapsing. Apart from preventing collapse of block-work over window and door spaces Lintels are also used to separate stacked block-work which help to stop the progression of longitudinal cracks which result from minor foundation settlements
