WTO Cautions Against U.S. Tariffs, Warns of Global Trade Decline

Abonima Media Blog โ€“ April 5, 2025

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has issued a stern warning that recent tariff hikes by the United States could significantly hinder global trade and economic growth.

This follows an announcement on April 2 by U.S. President Donald Trump of sweeping tariffs on all imports, including a 14% levy on Nigerian goods. The move has sparked concerns across the international trade community.

In a statement released on Thursday, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala revealed that the WTO is actively monitoring the developments and is in dialogue with member nations over the possible economic fallout. She stressed that numerous WTO members have voiced their concerns, prompting the organization to take steps to address the issue.

โ€œThese new tariffs, alongside other trade restrictions introduced earlier this year, could lead to a 1% decline in global merchandise trade volumes โ€” a sharp drop from our earlier projections, which anticipated stronger growth,โ€ Okonjo-Iweala explained.

She further warned of the risks of escalating trade tensions, which could trigger retaliatory measures from affected countries and deepen the downturn in global commerce.

Despite the setbacks, she noted that the bulk of international trade still functions under the WTOโ€™s Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) terms. However, that share has fallen from 80% at the beginning of the year to 74% due to the recent protectionist measures.

โ€œIt is crucial that WTO members come together and act responsibly to prevent this situation from spiraling into a full-blown trade conflict,โ€ she urged.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala reiterated the WTOโ€™s role as a neutral platform for dialogue, aimed at preventing disputes and promoting a stable and open global trading environment.

โ€œAs global economic uncertainties grow, the WTO remains committed to upholding the rules-based system and supporting cooperation among nations. We were built for times like these,โ€ she concluded.
