Most relationships don't fail because of the hard times…

They fail because these conversations never happened before the hard times arrived.

Conversation 1: "How do we handle conflict?"

Don't wait until you're in the middle of a fight to discover you have completely different approaches. Do you need space to process, or do you need to talk it through immediately? What feels like rejection to one person might be self-regulation for the other.

Discuss: What does repair look like for each of you after a disagreement? How do you know when you're ready to reconnect?

Conversation 2: "What does support look like when life gets difficult?"

When one of you is going through something hard: work stress, family issues, personal struggles - what do you each need? Some people need practical help. Others need emotional presence. Some need space to work through it alone first.

Discuss: How can you support each other without fixing, rescuing, or taking things personally when your partner is struggling?

Conversation 3: "What are our non-negotiables?"

Not everything is negotiable in relationships, and that's okay. But you need to know each other's absolute boundaries before you accidentally cross them during difficult times.

Discuss: What would genuinely make you consider leaving? What do you need to feel safe staying, even when things are hard?

These conversations often feel awkward when things are good. They did for me when I started having them in my current relationship. The other partner might even see them as premature.

But having them during calm moments, as early as possible, creates the foundation that holds you together when storms come.
