DOUBLE LIFE SYNDROME🔞
(The Art of Living Two Lives)

Chapter Thirty-One: The Truth

Hardguy’s revelation did not just land as a shock, it detonated inside the sitting room like a bomb.

For a few seconds, all three women simply stared at him.

Nobody moved.

Nobody blinked.

The silence that followed felt thick enough to choke on.

Then Kitty finally snapped out of it.

“Huh? Nice one, Mr. Solomon,” she lashed out angrily, folding her arms tightly across her chest. “You think you can use that nonsense to escape this situation, abi? Well, you’ve been caught red-handed. We all know you are not impotent.”

Hardguy let out a soft chuckle, almost amused by her reaction.

“Wow,” he said calmly. “Since you apparently know me better than I know myself, why not tell me more? Since you’re so eager to drag my ‘impotency’ with me.”

The sarcasm in his voice only irritated Kitty further.

Teny quickly stepped forward, clearly unsettled.

She looked at Hardguy, then at Belinda, before shaking her head repeatedly.

“Oga, it’s not possible o,” she said anxiously. “Oga, you no fit play that kain game with us now. (Sir, you can’t play that kind of game with us now) I’m pregnant and the child is yours. Maybe the doctor that told you that you’re impotent lied to you.”

Hardguy remained seated, nodding his head slowly as though listening to music only he could hear. A victorious smirk lingered on his face, calm and dangerously confident.

That expression unsettled everyone in the room even more.

Belinda, however, looked completely lost.

“Wait… babe,” she said slowly, struggling to process everything. “How are you suddenly impotent? When did this even happen? Or did you do a vasectomy? Because I honestly don’t understand what’s going on anymore.”

Her voice trembled slightly as emotions battled inside her.

“We have a child together and now you’re saying you are… Oh God, no. This can’t be true.”

She stood up abruptly and began pacing around the sitting room, pressing her fingers against her forehead as though trying to physically stop her thoughts from spiraling out of control.

The luxurious living room that once felt warm and peaceful now felt unbearably tense. Even the soft hum of the air conditioner could not calm the heaviness settling over everyone.

Belinda stopped briefly and turned toward Hardguy again.

“I need to speak with you privately,” she said firmly. “Because I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to take all of this in.”

Her eyes briefly shifted toward Kitty and then Teny.

“From bringing home a woman you lied about being a job seeker… to going so low as to impregnate our maid…”

“Madam, abeg ooo, which one be ‘going so low’?” Teny fired back immediately, clearly offended. (Madam, please, what do you mean by ‘going so low’?)

She flipped her hair dramatically before turning slowly like someone on a fashion runway, proudly admiring herself.

“Me sef fine no be small,” she continued confidently. (I’m very beautiful too.) Why oga no go fit look me twice?”

Despite the chaos swallowing the room, Hardguy suddenly burst into laughter.

A loud, uncontrollable laugh.

The reaction stunned everyone.

Belinda turned sharply toward him, disbelief written all over her face.

“This is not a laughing matter!” she snapped. “Why are you laughing after everything that has happened? What exactly is funny here?”

“Help me ask him oo,” Kitty quickly joined in, rubbing her stomach possessively. “Because I only came here to show my face before bringing my load and clothes into this house.”

She adjusted herself proudly before smiling at Belinda.

“Mrs. Belinda, very soon you’ll be having a co-wife. I am the new Amariya of this house.”

The smugness in her tone was impossible to miss.

“Because very soon,” she continued softly while caressing her belly, “I’ll be giving birth to a handsome baby boy for my husband.”

Belinda shut her eyes briefly as if trying to stop herself from exploding.

Then she turned toward Hardguy again.

“Solo, look at what you’ve caused,” she said bitterly. “From the maid insulting me openly to this one calling herself my co-wife.”

Her voice grew weaker with disappointment.

“Is this really what our marriage has become now? After everything we’ve suffered together… after all we’ve been through… now that life is finally getting better for us, this is when you decided to destroy everything by impregnating…”

She stopped midway and sighed deeply, unable to even finish the sentence.

The exhaustion in her voice carried more pain than anger.

Soon the room dissolved into noise again.

Kitty and Teny began talking over each other almost immediately.

“You think say na only you sabi love man?” Teny barked. (You think you’re the only one who knows how to love a man?)

Kitty scoffed loudly.

“At least I’m not a maid trying to force herself into madam’s position.”

“Who you dey call maid?” Teny shot back instantly.

The argument escalated quickly, both women throwing words at each other while Belinda slowly walked away from them all.

She no longer had the energy for the shouting.

Quietly, she moved to a distant couch at the far end of the sitting room and sat down heavily, staring into space while trying to absorb the humiliation unfolding before her.

Meanwhile, Hardguy simply remained seated.

Watching.

Silent.

Almost detached from the destruction happening around him.

After a while, he finally stood up.

“Okay,” he said calmly, his voice suddenly cutting through the noise. “I think all of you have had your fun. It’s time for everybody to leave my house.”

“Yes,” Belinda added tiredly from behind without even looking up. “You all heard him. Get out of our house.”

Hardguy slowly turned toward her.

Then, unexpectedly, he burst into laughter again.

This time the laughter sounded darker.

More dangerous.

“Madam Belinda,” he said mockingly, pointing lightly toward her, “including you.”

Belinda looked up sharply.

“Because among all of them,” Hardguy continued with a cold smile, “your own case is actually the deadliest.”

Belinda slowly lifted her head, confusion and shock written all over her face.

“What do you mean by that?” she asked quietly.

The entire sitting room fell silent again.

Even Kitty and Teny, who had been arguing moments ago, suddenly stopped talking and turned toward Hardguy.

Hardguy stood up slowly and adjusted his shirt before motioning for everyone to sit down.

“Sit,” he said calmly.

Something about his tone this time was different.

No jokes.

No sarcasm.

Just a strange calmness that immediately made the atmosphere heavier.

Reluctantly, the ladies settled back into their seats while Hardguy remained standing in the middle of the room like a man finally ready to reveal a secret he had buried for too long.

“So firstly,” he began slowly, “after my wedding and everything, I started feeling sharp pains around my… you know.”

He paused briefly, avoiding direct eye contact.

“At first, I ignored it. I thought it was stress or maybe one small infection. But when the pain became constant, I went to the hospital for proper tests.”

Belinda’s face tightened slightly.

Hardguy exhaled deeply before continuing.

“That was when they discovered it was early-stage prostate cancer.”

The words landed heavily inside the room.

Kitty unconsciously adjusted herself on the couch.

Even Teny’s expression changed immediately.

Hardguy looked away for a moment, almost like someone reliving a nightmare.

“The tumour was located in a very dangerous position,” he continued quietly. “The doctors said if they didn’t remove it quickly, it could become something much worse.”

He paused again and sighed deeply.

“For me, everything happened fast after that. Surgery dates, consultations, scans… I just wanted it gone. I didn’t tell Belinda because I already knew how skeptical she was about surgeries and hospitals. I felt it would only scare her more.”

Belinda stared at him silently, her eyes already beginning to water.

“During the surgery,” Hardguy continued, “they discovered that the only safe way to remove the cancerous tumour was to cut the two ending vas deferens tubes.”

He gave a faint bitter smile.

“The tubes responsible for transporting semen.”

Nobody spoke.

The silence in the room became suffocating.

Hardguy slowly nodded to himself before continuing.

“Two months after the surgery, the doctors confirmed I was stable and recovering well. So I decided it was finally time to tell my supposed wife everything.”

That last phrase carried a subtle sting.

Belinda noticed it immediately.

“But before I could even explain anything…” he said slowly, “Belinda came to me herself and told me she was pregnant.”

Belinda’s breathing became uneven instantly.

Hardguy turned and looked directly at her now.

“And to my surprise,” he continued calmly, “when I asked how long… she said one month.”

The room went dead silent.

Completely silent.

Belinda looked like the ground beneath her feet had suddenly disappeared.

Kitty’s confident expression vanished completely.

Teny’s mouth fell open slightly as realization slowly began settling into the room.

Hardguy paused deliberately and stared at Belinda for several long seconds.

Then slowly…

He smiled at her.
