20 THINGS TO NOTE CONCERNING AFRICAN NUTMEG

1. The Igbo called it ehuru, Yorubas call it ariwo, Hausas call it gujiya dan miya.

2. In Igbo language, it is called ehuru or ehu. It is mostly used to cook Igbo local dishes.

3. Mostly used in preparing banga soup, pepper soups, abacha, nkwobi and isi ewu.

4. It is a highly aromatic cooking spice with a unique taste.

5. Ehuru is the king of all local spices and it is the most used local spice in Nigeria.

6. The longer you leave it to infuse, the stronger it flavours your food.

7. It comes in a hard shell that contains the seed which is ground and the powder is added to traditional soups and dishes.

8. It has a strong flavour so as a little goes a long way.

9. It comes from a large spherical fruit related to the custard apple that is native to west Africa.

10. It is used as a nutmeg substitute and has a similar earthy, nutty flavour.

11. Toasting the seed on a hot pan to remove its skin and grind it to prepare your recipes.

12. Ehuru has a beautiful fragrant.

13. Due to its strong taste, you don't have to use a lot, so that it won't overpower other ingredients.

14. It is used predominantly in traditional Nigerian dishes.

15. This unique spice adds an aromatic and intense earthy flavour to both savoury and sweet dishes.

17. Roast seed for 30 seconds to 1 minute, remove the shell/skin and grind/pound, grate into powder.
