As Africa accelerates the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), legal professionals are being called to expand their influence beyond courtrooms and contracts into the economic corridors shaping the continent’s future.
The AfCFTA has ushered in a new era of opportunity—one that demands proactive legal expertise in trade facilitation, regulatory alignment, investment structuring, and SME empowerment.
Now as outlined at the recent African Union Private Sector Forum, the private sector does not only has critical role to play in unlocking the potential of Intra-Africa trade, and Investment as the cornerstone of future Intra-African Trade but must lead from the front in shaping an integrated, investor and export ready Africa.
Legal practitioners must now embrace a new frontier: providing technical and strategic advisory across value chains that anchor Africa’s industrial and trade transformation
In that regard, this op-ed explores 89 product value chains—spanning agriculture, pharmaceuticals, textiles, machinery, and digital services etc—where legal minds can offer crucial insights and market support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
From advocacy, trade promotion and facilitation to advising on standards compliance and investment protections, legal experts can become catalysts for inclusive prosperity.
Legal professionals, now is the time to seize the moment with bold, practical engagement in the business of trade and investment advisory support.
