URGENT CALL FOR EMPLOYMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICERS IN NIGERIA β€” WAHEB

The West Africa Health Examinations Board (WAHEB) has added it's voice to support the urgent call for employment of environmental health officers in Nigeria. This call has become necessary as the Environmental Health profession is facing existential threat in Nigeria. It may surprise you to note that some states like Rivers State have only two (2) employed environmental health officers in the state civil service.
No employment of environmental health officers have taken place in Rivers State since 2009 despite deaths and retirement that have created huge vacancies in the state.

According to WAHEB, there is a growing need for the employment of more Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) across Nigeria. This need is not limited to Rivers State alone, but extends to all states of the federation.

Environmental Health Officers play a critical role in disease prevention, environmental sanitation, food safety, waste management, and public health protection. However, the current workforce is inadequate to effectively address the increasing environmental and public health challenges facing the country.

We respectfully call on relevant government authorities and stakeholders to prioritize the recruitment and proper placement of qualified EHOs nationwide. Strengthening the environmental health workforce is a key step toward improving public health outcomes and achieving a cleaner, safer, and healthier Nigeria.

Environmental health is preventive health.

Investing in EHOs is investing in the nation’s future.
