ADVANCING CLIMATE GOVERNANCE AND WASTE-TO-WEALTH INITIATIVES
โEarlier this week, the MD/CEO of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC) participated in a high-level workshop hosted by the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change and PACE-FCDO to refine the Kano State Climate Change Bill and validate the Policy Results Framework. These sessions focused on aligning laws with international standards and enhancing monitoring for climate resilience.
โAdditionally, the MD/CEO joined the Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) Kano, Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil, in a strategic session to sensitize market leaders on proper waste management. During the engagement, he pledged the Commissionโs support in creating an enabling environment for refuse disposal and announced upcoming NWDC initiatives designed to transform waste-to-wealth and waste-to-energy.

NORTH-WEST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION PRESENTS 2025 PROGRESS REPORT TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY JOINT COMMITTEE
The Managing Director/CEO of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Maโaji, presented the Commissionโs Progress Report (JanuaryโDecember 2025) to the National Assembly Joint Committee, highlighting achievements, progress made, and challenges, particularly funding constraints.
Led by Sen. Babangida Hussaini and Hon. Suleiman Abubakar Gumi, the Committee commended the MD/CEO for progress recorded despite non-release of funds, acknowledged the Commissionโs strong foundational efforts, and pledged to support the deployment of Executive Directors and Directors to strengthen operations.
The Committee urged the Commission to address security challenges in line with the declared state of emergency and emphasized the need for harmony between Management and the Board. It assured the immediate release of the take-off grant to enable full operations, enhance service delivery, and support the reintegration of insurgency victims.
The Commission was also advised to collaborate with state governments, development partners, investors, and philanthropies to mobilize additional resources.

He called for stronger partnerships to equip youth with essential tech skills and was honored to present KASITDA's Award of Excellence to His Excellency, Gov. Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his development strides.

We specifically commend President Bola Tinubu for his decisive declaration of a state of emergency on security; this commendable achievement is a testament to that commitment and the bravery of our troops in securing Nigerian lives.
โAs we thank you for your recent heroics, we also wish to gently draw your attention to the rising unease reported along the Kano State borders. We urge our security partners to proactively extend their vigilance to these specific areas, looking into the emerging tension now so that we can collectively preserve the peace and safety of our people.

Today, the MD/CEO of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma'aji, made an unscheduled stop at the Nigerian Content Development & Monitoring Board (NCDMB) CSR Training and Empowerment Initiative in Kano State.
โHe met with trainees currently mastering Solar Installation and Welding Fabrication, assessing the facilities and, most importantly, offering words of encouragement to the participants.
โHe noted that skill acquisition is the most effective tool for tackling unemployment and that technical expertise is the bedrock of the region's economic revival.
โWell done to the NCDMB for facilitating this empowerment initiative!

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma'aji, participated in the inaugural High-Level Stakeholders' Engagement on Regional Development. The meeting was convened by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), in collaboration with the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Regional Development Programmes, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, and the Federal Ministry of Regional Development.
โThe event, which featured directives from the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and other Ministers, tasked Regional Development Commissions to intensify efforts at fast-tracking growth, stability, and peace across the nation.
โThe MD/CEO's involvement extended to the practical technical sessions, which centered on practical deliberations and the clarification of policy frameworks governing the operations of Regional Development Commissions.

NWDC, HADEJIA JAMA'ARE RIVER BASIN AUTHORITY PARTNER TO BOOST AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY
The North-West Development Commission (NWDC) and the Hadejia Jama'are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA) have agreed to establish a strategic partnership to transform agricultural productivity across the North-West region.
The collaboration was formalized during a courtesy visit by Professor Shehu Abdullahi Ma'aji, Managing Director/CEO of NWDC, to HJRBDA management in Kano on Wednesday. Prof. Ma'aji and his delegation were received by Engr. Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, Managing Director of HJRBDA, alongside Executive Director of Finance, Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso, and other officials.
Prof. Ma'aji briefed the HJRBDA leadership on the Commission's mandate, requested access to arable lands to attract investors for agricultural development among others.
Engr. Bichi expressed enthusiasm for the partnership and highlighted the region's potential, noting that Kano and Jigawa states alone possess over 2.4 million cubic meters of water reserves and 2.1 million hectares of arable land. HJRBDA currently manages 22,000 hectares directly.
He outlined ongoing initiatives, including greenhouse farming training for over 1,000 youths, deployment of 500 youth extension workers, installation of industrial boreholes, and introduction of drip irrigation systems and smart farming technologies.
Both agencies committed to establishing a formal framework for collaboration to facilitate investor engagement, technology transfer, and sustainable agricultural development.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma'aji, visited the eHealth Africa head office in Kano yesterday to discuss partnerships aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery across the North-West region.
During the meeting with eHealth Africa's team, discussions focused on expanding healthcare services to community/local and ward levels, strengthening primary healthcare facilities, delivering basic services to rural communities, and deploying telemedicine and mobile clinics.
Prof. Ma'aji assured eHealth Africa of the Commission's full support for these collaborative efforts.
The MD/CEO and his delegation toured the organization's facilities to observe operations firsthand. Prof. Ma'aji commended eHealth Africa for its dedicated service to communities across Nigeria.

The House Committee on the North-West Development Commission (NWDC), led by its Chairman, Hon. Suleiman Abubakar Gumi, yesterday carried out a comprehensive oversight visit to the Commissionโs headquarters in Kano, which is currently undergoing renovation.
The delegation, which included members of the Committee and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), Hon. Abdullahi Yakasai Tanko, inspected the ongoing works and assessed the level of progress achieved.
Hon. Gumi expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work, noting that the renovation project is nearing completion. He commended the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Maaji, for his commitment to delivering a befitting headquarters that reflects the Commissionโs development mandate.
The Committee further acknowledged the pivotal support of the Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Barau I. Jibrin, CON, for facilitating funding for the renovation project, describing his role as a clear demonstration of exemplary leadership and dedication to the advancement of the North-West region.
A major highlight of the visit was the formal acceptance of a donation of solar power systems by Fidelity Bank Plc, which will be installed at the headquarters to ensure reliable and sustainable energy supply. The Committee commended this gesture as an example of meaningful private sector collaboration in regional development.
Hon. Gumi also appreciated the contributions of philanthropists and stakeholders whose generous donations have supported the establishment and smooth take-off of the Commission. He reaffirmed that the NWDC belongs to all stakeholders in the region and called for continued partnership and collective commitment to its mission.
The oversight team also inspected other strategic assets and facilities, including the BUA site, the Commissionโs permanent office location, vehicles donated by the Kano State Government, and ICT equipment provided by various partners. These interventions, the Committee noted, will significantly enhance the Commissionโs operational efficiency and ability to deliver on its mandate.
The North-West Development Commission remains steadfast in its commitment to fast-tracking socio-economic transformation across the region, in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโs Renewed Hope Agenda.
