Fattening rams and bulls in Nigeria is a lucrative business, especially during festive seasons when the demand for livestock is high.

Next are key details about the ingredients, feeding schedule, and time required for fattening.

A balanced feed is crucial for effective fattening. It should contain energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Here's a common mix:

Energy Sources:
Maize (corn)
Sorghum
Cassava peel (dried and ground)

Protein Sources:
Groundnut cake
Soya bean meal
Cotton seed cake
Brewer's dried grains

Fiber Sources:
Wheat offal
Rice bran
Palm kernel cake

Minerals and Vitamins:
Bone meal
Salt
Premixes (vitamin and mineral supplements)

Additive:
Urea (to enhance protein
levels in roughages like straw) Molasses (to improve palatability)

Roughages (Bulk Feed):
Napier grass
Brachiaria grass
Silage (e.g., maize or grass silage)
Hay (e.g., groundnut hay, beans hay, lablab hay)

Feed the animals 2-3 times a day. Ensure they have clean drinking water at all times.

Feeding Routine:
Morning (7:00 AM): Concentrates (energy and protein mix)

Afternoon (12:00 PM): Roughages (hay, grass, or silage)

Evening (5:00 PM): Concentrates + Additives

Common feeding schedule in Nigeria: In this feeding schedule, hay or roughage are fed in the morning, and concentrates are fed in the afternoon.

Example Feeding Routine:
Morning (7:00 AM): Hay or roughages (e.g. groundnut hay, beans hay, lablab hay, or grasses like Napier).

Afternoon (1:00 PM): Concentrates (energy and protein mix such as maize, groundnut cake, wheat bran).

Duration for Fattening
Rams: 60-90 days (2-3 months)
Bulls: 90-120 days (3-4 months) This period depends on the breed, age, and initial weight of the animals.

Other Key Considerations

Housing:

Providea clean, well-ventilated shelter to prevent stress and disease. Ensure adequate space for movement to prevent overcrowding.

Health Management:

Deworm regularly (every 4-6 weeks). Vaccinate against common diseases like anthrax and foot-and-mout
