This quote highlights the difference between sincere advice and public humiliation. When someone corrects you in private, it shows respect, care, and a genuine desire for your improvement. Such advice protects your dignity, so the heart remains open and willing to accept the truth.
But when correction is done publicly, especially in a harsh or mocking way, it often targets pride rather than guidance. Even if the message is correct, the method creates defensiveness, resistance, and resentment because no one likes to be embarrassed in front of others.
Islam teaches this principle clearly.
The scholars said:
“Whoever advises his brother in private has advised him sincerely; whoever advises him publicly has exposed him.”
The Prophet ﷺ also corrected people with wisdom. Often he would say,
“Why do some people do such-and-such?”
without naming or shaming anyone protecting honor while teaching truth.
So the lesson is:
Private advice preserves brotherhood.
Public humiliation breeds hostility.
The goal of advice is reform, not reputation.
When advice respects dignity, it reaches the heart.
