Marrying your cousin

Assalamu alaykum, is it correct to marry your cousin?

Wa'alaykumu salaam warahmatullohi wabarakaatuh.

There is nothing bad whatsoever in marrying your cousin, based on shariah it is halal and not among the prohibited categories of women.
However, culturally some people may find it odd in Africa, in the west there is rumour that it has medical effect (stomach pain for the children born through that) while in Asia, it is rampant. The messenger of Allah solla llohu alayhi wasallam also married his cousin Zainab bint Jahsh and Ali and Fatimah married each other while they are also cousins (may Allah have mercy upon them).
