B A R S
This is how happiness turns sour;
She was free like a bird, tiny and full of life. All she looks forward to was the stories told under the full moonlight,
The night skies were full of promise,
And the early morning sun brought hope of more play. And more play and more joy to bath outside when it rained;
Greed attracted them to her. She was described as “brown and beautiful”, “ripe and ready”. The menarche convinced her father she was truly ripe. She was the new business. Became an object of collateral for a farmland at 12. No more stories under the moon. No more baths under the rain. Her tiny legs were not to run when the sun was out. Taken to the city by a man old to be called Grandpa. She loved the TV, Barbie became her best. Then nights after nights she made sacrifices for the farmland in tears. A tiny life grew inside her and she lost in pain. She swore to revenge when her legs became stronger.
After 7 years, she was certain the knife was meant for more than cutting mere onions. It could slit throats. And one by one she drew lines on the necks of those who suggested her as the collateral.
She was caught and was to be behind bars. Punished for being brown and beautiful. For the greed of the father who will never turn conveniently in his grave. For the greed of grandpa that will take another girl in exchange for a farmland.
