IBA LCDA MARKS WORLD HYPERTENSION DAY WITH SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME
THEME : “CONTROLLING HYPERTENSION TOGETHER ”
The Executive Chairman of Iba Local Council Development Area, Hon. Yisa Abiola Jubril who was ably represented by the Supervisor for Health, Hon. Princess Adewunmi Barakat Raji Ashade, organized a sensitization programme to mark this year’s World Hypertension Day.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Princess Ashade stated that the programme was organized primarily to raise awareness about hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, which has become one of the leading causes of preventable deaths worldwide. She further explained that another important aim was to educate residents on pharmacovigilance — the monitoring and reporting of the effects of medicines to ensure their safe and effective use.
Dr. Abdul Lateef Muminah delivered a lecture on the causes and preventive measures for hypertension. She defined hypertension as blood pressure readings above 140/90 mmHg and advised anyone with such readings to see a doctor immediately. She noted that hypertension is hereditary and more common among Black populations than White populations, as African kidneys are more sensitive to salt, which can increase the risk of high blood pressure.
According to Dr. Muminah, many causes of hypertension are linked to diet and can be managed. She advised residents to reduce their intake of palm oil and vegetable oil to the barest minimum, and to avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as these also contribute to hypertension. She emphasized that if properly controlled with medication, hypertension does not have to lead to complications. To prevent high blood pressure, she recommended reducing salt intake and maintaining a healthy diet. She concluded by urging everyone to check their blood pressure regularly, adding that well-managed hypertension does not cause death.
Dr. Agbogunleri, the CDC Chairman of Iba LCDA who also served as a health speaker, described hypertension as one of the most dangerous health issues because it can kill quickly and suddenly. He stressed the importance of regular hospital visits to know one’s health status.
