NYSC CORPS MEMBERS EQUIPPED FOR CLASSROOM EXCELLENCE IN ISEYIN CAMP

Corps Members of the 2026 Batch A Stream 2 at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Iseyin, Oyo State, have been equipped with practical tools for effective teaching, following an insightful lecture delivered by Mr. Yusuf Olayinka on thriving in their Places of Primary Assignment. The sensitisation which focused on preparing prospective teachers for impactful service, underscored the importance of professionalism, discipline, and purposeful engagement in the classroom, in line with the core objectives of the National Youth Service Corps.

In his address, Mr. Yusuf emphasized the need for Corps Members to understand the structure, culture, and expectations of their assigned schools. He urged them to approach their responsibilities with maturity and a strong sense of duty, noting that teachers occupy positions of influence that require both authority and approachability. According to him, maintaining professional boundaries while fostering a supportive learning environment is essential to shaping positive student behaviour and promoting academic excellence.

Highlighting the significance of character, he cautioned against the use of abusive, demeaning, or vulgar language in dealing with students. He stressed that discipline must be corrective rather than punitive, firmly discouraging corporal punishment and the use of canes. Mr. Yusuf advocated for more humane and constructive approaches to behaviour management, which not only preserve the dignity of students but also encourage lasting positive change.

He further addressed issues of personal conduct and professional ethics, advising Corps Members to maintain neatness and presentability at all times, as appearance often influences the respect accorded to educators. He warned against unprofessional practices such as excessive familiarity with students, borrowing money, engaging in gossip, eating students’ food, charging personal devices in students’ homes, or neglecting to mark assignments, describing such behaviours as detrimental to the integrity of the teaching profession.

Encouraging academic competence, Mr. Yusuf urged Corps Members to master their subject areas and prepare comprehensive lesson notes while adopting diverse and engaging teaching methodologies. He reminded them never to underestimate the intellectual capacity of their students and to remain committed to continuous learning. He also stressed the importance of teamwork, collaboration, and harmonious relationships with colleagues, noting that unity within the school system reflects the broader goal of national integration championed by the Scheme.

Concluding his lecture, Mr. Yusuf reaffirmed the critical role teachers play in national development, urging Corps Members to embody the values of punctuality, dedication, mentorship, and integrity. He charged them to approach their assignments with a strong sense of purpose, recognizing that their contributions extend beyond the classroom to shaping the future of the nation. The lecture reinforced the NYSC’s commitment to instilling discipline, leadership, and service excellence among Corps Members as they prepare to make meaningful impact in their host communities.
