Exodus 10:1 reveals a sobering truth: being resistant to God does not diminish His authority; it only places you on the side of misfortune. God’s signs and wonders, in such cases, are not blessings, they are evidence of His power to judge. The unfortunate are not merely the weak or unfaithful, but the hardened hearts that refuse correction and continue in rebellion.

At home, I can ask for more food or freely play and shout, but in a stranger’s house, I often hold back. The difference is belonging. That same sense of belonging gives peace and freedom with God. Until we come to the awareness of our full adoption as sons of God, we’d feel restrained from exercising our sonship rights and privileges.

This clearly shows all that we need is to hearken and come, and by this is what the book of Romans 10:17 calls faith: “So faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The understanding of this fuels our desire to travel farther with God, without being encumbered by the worries of what we’d give in exchange.
