CLARIFICATION ON MISINFORMATION AND A NOTE OF CAUTION TO NIGERIAN STUDENTS REGARDING THE PROPOSED SOLIDARITY AND ADVOCACY MOVEMENT OVER THE CONTINUED CAPTIVITY OF ABDUCTED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS IN ORIRE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OYO STATE

Upon my emergence as your President and Commander-in-Chief, I expressed my concern over the continued captivity of our students and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State, which has now entered its third week since the unfortunate and gruesome incident that led to their abduction.

This prolonged captivity has compelled me to call for a solidarity and advocacy movement aimed at securing the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students and teachers, as opposed to the misleading information suggesting a “mother of all protests.”

That said, I have observed with grave concern the manipulative actions of some political jobbers who are now attempting to exploit the situation for their own selfish interests. It is indeed sardonic that some callous and unpatriotic individuals would tread this ugly path. As a responsible and empathetic organization, we will not allow ourselves to be used as instruments for the advancement of selfish political agendas.

Similarly, there has been a wave of false and misleading information circulating to the effect that our organization is planning a “mother of all protests.” We wish to categorically state that this information is entirely false and should be disregarded by the public.

For the avoidance of doubt, our current mobilization is strictly an advocacy and solidarity movement, not a protest. We have a well-structured timetable of activities aimed at constructive engagement and peaceful advocacy. At no point has the leadership of our organization declared or approved any “mother of all protest.” Members of the public, particularly our members, are strongly advised to avoid faceless groups or individuals attempting to exploit the name of our organization to cause tension or unrest in the state.

Furthermore, we urge the security agencies to remain focused and not be distracted or overstretched by false alarms or fabricated protest claims. Their continued attention is needed in ensuring the safe return and protection of our students and teachers.

Our advocacy movement in Oyo State is solely geared towards supporting ongoing efforts to secure the release and safety of all affected students and educators. It is not, and has never been, a call for any form of mass protest or disruption.

To this end, we call on all NANS structures, stakeholders, student leaders, activists, and well-meaning Nigerians who wish to participate in this noble cause to exercise caution and disregard any misleading information concerning the proposed solidarity and advocacy walk that does not emanate from the leadership of NANS. We further urge all interested persons to await official and authorized directives from the leadership of NANS.

Thank you.

Yours in struggle,

Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, GCNS
President and Commander-in-Chief of the Aluta Forces
National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)
