White Pocket, a striking area within the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. The formations are primarily composed of Navajo Sandstone, originating from ancient sand dunes that were petrified over many millennia. Erosion by wind and water has since sculpted these rocks into bizarre and intricate shapes, creating a landscape with swirling patterns and unusual textures. The resulting appearance is reminiscent of an extraterrestrial surface, contributing to White Pocket’s otherworldly and mesmerizing appeal.

Pumice is a type of extrusive volcanic rock, produced when lava with a very high content of water and gases is discharged from a volcano. As the gas bubbles escape, the lava becomes frothy. When this lava cools and hardens, the result is a very light rock material filled with tiny bubbles of gas.

A clay mineral is a finely crystalline sheet silicate with hydroxyl ions, and in some cases with water as part of the structure. By sheet silicate we mean that the silica tetrahedra are arranged in flat sheets, with strong covalent bonding within the sheets, and that these sheets are arranged in stacks, where the bonding between the sheets is relatively weak. A hydroxyl ion is an oxygen-hydrogen pair (OH–), and these form a part of all clay minerals. Some clay minerals also have H2O as part of the structure, or in some cases water is simply attached onto the structure.
