UN Issues Global Water and Sanitation Warning

The United Nations, in its latest Sustainable Development Goals Report (2025), warns that the world is far off track in achieving Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation for All. At the current pace, universal access will not be reached before 2049, leaving billions at risk.

According to the UN report:

2.2 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water.

3.4 billion people lack basic sanitation.

1.7 billion people lack hygiene services at home.

Climate change, population growth, and pollution are worsening these challenges, and Africa faces a double threat of water scarcity and sanitation crises. Without urgent intervention, the urban population in Africa facing water scarcity could double by 2050.

What the UN is Calling For

The UN urges massive investment, innovation, and coordination to:

💧Improve infrastructure for water and sanitation.

💧Protect and restore water-related ecosystems.

💧Enhance water-use efficiency in agriculture, industry, and households.

💧Promote inclusive governance and community engagement.

💧Integrate water security into climate action plans.

As the UN calls the world to action, Macs Foundation emphasizes that Africa cannot afford to wait. The continent must act boldly and immediately by:

1. Investing in water infrastructure for households, schools, and healthcare facilities.

2. Protecting rivers, lakes, and wetlands from pollution and overuse.

3. Adopting efficient irrigation and water management practices to secure food systems.

4. Empowering women, youth, and communities in water governance.

5. Linking water security with climate resilience strategies.
