Addressing the Lagos unveiling criticism
I understand the frustration. Carnival Calabar belongs to Cross River, and it should. But the theme unveiling in Lagos wasn’t about moving Carnival. It was about marketing.
1. Go where the money is
Sponsors, brand managers, and CEOs of multinationals are based in Lagos. Getting them to Calabar for a theme launch is a hard sell. Bringing the unveiling to them puts Carnival Calabar directly in front of decision makers. They see the vision, hear the Governor’s investment opportunities, and write the checks.
2. Separate the product from the show
Calabar still hosts the street party, the bands, the culture, the tourism revenue. That’s not changing. Lagos hosted a 2-hour business pitch. Calabar gets the 30-day economic boom. Think of it like a movie trailer premiere in LA, but the actual filming and jobs stay in Cross River.
3. Brand visibility = bigger Carnival
When MTN, Arise IP, or First Bank executives witness the concept firsthand in Lagos, they’re more likely to increase sponsorships. More sponsors means better floats, more security, more jobs, more global press for Calabar.
So the unveiling was logistics, not betrayal. We took the pitch to investors so Calabar can host the party.
The goal is the same: make Carnival Calabar bigger and more profitable for Cross Riverians.
