Calabar Carnival 2023 Coming to the South?
Calabar Carnival, also known as Africa's Biggest Street Party, is an annual festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Nigeria and the continent. The carnival, which was started in 2004 by former governor Donald Duke, attracts Thousands of tourists and participants from over 25 countries every December.
But not everyone in Calabar, the capital city of Cross River State, has been able to enjoy the full benefits of the carnival. For years, the residents of Calabar South, one of the two local government areas that make up the city, have been left out of the main carnival activities that take place along the Murtala Mohammed Highway in Calabar Municipal.
Calabar South, which is home to the current governor Prince Otu, has a reputation for being the most dangerous and underdeveloped part of the city, plagued by violence, poverty, and poor infrastructure. Many people consider it a no-go area, especially during the festive season.
Otu, who is popularly known as Sweet Prince, promised to bring development and inclusiveness to his people and to revive the carnival spirit in the South.
Since his inauguration, Otu has embarked on several projects to improve the living conditions and security of Calabar South. He has also initiated some carnival-related activities, such as the construction of better roads, the decoration of the city including the south, and the sponsorship of carnival bands.
These signs have raised the hopes and expectations of many residents of Calabar South, who are eager to join the carnival fun and showcase their talents and culture to the world. They are also looking forward to seeing the power bikes, the floats, the costumes, and the celebrities that usually grace the carnival parade in the municipal area.
However, the question remains: will the 2023 Calabar Carnival reach the south? Will the governor be able to fulfill his promise and bring the carnival to his people? Will the carnival organizers and stakeholders be willing to extend the carnival route and activities to the south? Will the security agencies be able to ensure the safety and orderliness of the carnival in the south? Will the people of Calabar South be ready to embrace the carnival and celebrate peacefully with their fellow citizens and visitors?
These are some of the questions that will be answered in the coming weeks, as the countdown to the 2023 Calabar Carnival begins. The carnival, which has the theme "Season of Sweetness", is expected to be a spectacular and memorable event that will showcase the unity and diversity of Africa and its people.
Whether or not the South will join the party, one thing is certain: the carnival will be a great opportunity for the people of Calabar, Cross River State, and Nigeria to showcase their culture, creativity, and hospitality to the world. It will also be a platform for promoting tourism, entertainment, and economic development in the state and the country.
