PRESS RELEASE

‎*ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION: CHAIRMAN ADEDEJI PARTICIPATES IN LAGOS STATE MONTHLY ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION EXERCISE*

‎`...Inspects Blocked Canals and Drainages, Meets Akoka Community Stakeholders on Flood Control`

‎The Executive Chairman of Bariga Local Council, *Hon. Adedeji Bukola Omope, FCPA,* earlier today joined residents and stakeholders across Lagos State in observing the monthly environmental sanitation exercise aimed at promoting a cleaner, healthier, and flood-free environment.

‎During the monitoring exercise, the Chairman inspected the drainage system beneath the Ekimogun Under Bridge, where desilting operations and the evacuation of refuse were ongoing. She commended the environmental workers for their efforts and emphasized the importance of maintaining clean drainage channels to prevent flooding and environmental hazards.

‎The inspection team also visited the drainage network along Adetoke Street before proceeding to Alhaji Ariyo Street, where road construction is currently underway. Accompanied by officials of the Bariga Environmental Department, the Environmental Friendly Advocacy Development (EFAD) team, and members of Isokan Community Development Association (CDA), the Chairman assessed the flow of water from the Alhaji Ariyo drainage channel into the Lagos Lagoon.

‎Following the inspection tour, Hon. Adedeji responded to the invitation of Akoka Community stakeholders at Aiyetoro Primary School, where extensive discussions were held on the persistent flooding challenges affecting the community. Deliberations focused on identifying practical and sustainable solutions to mitigate the recurring problem.

‎The Chairman, alongside community leaders and stakeholders, embarked on an assessment walk through several flood-prone areas, including Emily Akinola Street, Tunde Bello Street, Obayan Street, Afolabi Brown Street, Oshifolarin Street, and adjoining roads.

‎During the engagement, residents expressed concerns over the incessant flooding experience in the area. While acknowledging the peculiar topography of Akoka and its proximity to the Lagos Lagoon, which contributes significantly to the challenge, the Chairman assured residents of government intervention and reiterated the Council's commitment to collaborating with relevant state agencies to address the situation.

‎She further urged residents to support government efforts by discouraging the construction of structures on drainage alignments and canals, noting that such developments obstruct the free flow of waste water into the lagoon and worsen flooding.

‎Hon. Adedeji assured the community that their concerns had been duly noted and that proactive steps would be taken to bring lasting relief to residents.

‎Among those who accompanied the Chairman during the exercise were the Vice Chairman of Bariga Local Council, Hon. Babatunde Adesida; Deputy Leader, Hon. Abiola Shakiru; Majority Leader, Hon. Funmilayo Adeogun; Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Tina Ogbere; Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Sodiq Olatayo; Special Adviser on Environment, Canal, Drainage and Waste Management, Hon.
