Amana Sickle Cell Foundation, Bauchi State Govt, and WHO Partner to Combat Sickle Cell Disease_
The Bauchi State Ministry of Health, World Health Organization (WHO) Bauchi State Office, and Amana Sickle Cell Foundation have partnered to enhance efforts against sickle cell disease and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Hon. Commissioner of Health, Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam, commended Amana Sickle Cell Foundation’s impactful work:
- 40% reduction in sickle cell incidence in Bauchi State
- 70% increase in premarital screening access
- 65% increase in compliance
“Amana’s efforts are making a real difference in our state’s health landscape,” said Dr. Dambam.
Dr. Sani Ibrahim, WHO State Coordinator, welcomed Amana Sickle Cell Foundation CEO Abdulqadir Gambo Musa, and a fruitful discussion fostered partnership and friendship.
Together, we’re making a tangible difference in Bauchi’s health.
This partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in addressing sickle cell diseases and other NCDs.

Amana Sickle Cell Foundation is launching its second phase of the insurance scheme into the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, in partnership with Bauchi State Health Contributory Management Agency. This is a big step toward better health access for sickle cell patients in Bauchi and beyond. 💪

Advancing Implementation of PEN-Plus for Severe NCDs in Africa: Technical Innovations, Operational Insights, and Scalable Solutions, highlighted the need for accelerated implementation of the PEN-Plus strategy to address the growing burden of severe non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Africa. High-level policymakers, global and regional experts, donors, development partners, private sector representatives, civil society organizations, and NCD focal points from Ministries of Health across the African region attended the conference.

The conference resulted in a renewed commitment to accelerating PEN-Plus implementation, increasing investment, strengthening referral systems, and improving access to specialized care to combat the growing burden of NCDs in Africa. The finalization of the African Agenda for the upcoming United Nations High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) on NCDs in September 2025 positions PEN-Plus as a central pillar in the region's response to severe NCDs. With 20 countries in Africa implementing the PEN-Plus strategy, the conference marked a significant milestone in the collective efforts to address the growing burden of NCDs in Africa, setting the stage for accelerated progress.
