Commission Of Inquiry Into Awka Traditional Stool Ends Public Hearing

By Ngozi Obileri (ABS News)

The Commission of Inquiry into the traditional stool of Awka will submit it's report to Governor Chukwuma Soludo before the 17th of March, 2026.

Chairman of the Commission, Justice Paul Obidigwe (retired) flanked by other members of the commission made this known at the end of the day two of the public hearing into the issue held at the Amphitheater, Light House Awka, where he said that the commission received thirty-two memoranda, which they read and listened to one after the other since the first day of the hearing.

He explained that now that hearing has come to an end, they would go back and put all they have heard together, and work with the Anambra State traditional rulers law and and Awka traditional law, and come up with a report and recommendation in accordance with their terms of reference.

Speaking during the hearing, the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Benneth Emeka, who is a member of the commission, called on the people of Awka to sue for peace as without peace, no society will progress, reminding them that only one person will be their traditional ruler at a time for their own good, appreciating Ndi Awka for coming for the hearing and presenting their memoranda.

The President General of Awka Development Union Nigeria, Mr. Frederick Chinwuba, and a stakeholder in the community, Chief Jonathan Nzekwe, appealed to Ndi Awka to be calm so the commission will settle the dispute once and for the good of their community, urging the commission to remain unbiased and bring lasting peace to Awka.

The commission earlier heard from groups and individuals whose memoranda were not called yesterday, including the Traditional Prime Minister of Awka, Chief Benjamin Okoye, bringing the public hearing to a close.
