Senator Umeh Condemns Demolition At Lagos Trade Fair Complex, Calls Action “Illegal and Intimidatory”
Senator Victor Umeh has strongly criticized the recent demolition of structures at the Trade Fair Complex in Lagos, describing the move as “illegal” and “a deliberate act to intimidate the people.” Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, the senator expressed outrage over the actions of the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning, who publicly defended the demolition.
“I am surprised that the Commissioner came on television to justify his illegal actions,” Umeh stated. “The Trade Fair Complex is a federal establishment. Federal lands are under the control of federal government agencies, not Lagos State. There are clear demarcations of jurisdiction between federal and state lands.”
The senator emphasized that the complex is managed by the Trade Fair Management Board, a federal agency, and insisted that Lagos State authorities have no legal claim over the land. He further emphasised that the demolition was carried out without prior notice to the traders, many of whom had received approvals for their structures from the federal board.
“All the structures at the complex were approved by the Trade Fair Management Board,” Umeh said. “This is not just a breach of protocol—it’s a calculated attempt to intimidate law-abiding citizens.”
