NLC, ILO Kick Off 3-Day Workshop to Strengthen Trade Union Voice on Labour Migration in Nigeria and ECOWAS
Yesterday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO), declared open a three-day workshop on Strengthening Trade Union Engagement on Labour Migration Governance in Nigeria and the ECOWAS Region at the Top Rank Hotel, Utako, Abuja.
The opening session was graced by distinguished stakeholders, including the ILO Director for Africa, Ms. Vanessa Phala; the Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Comrade Benson Upah; the ILO-ACTRAV Senior Specialist on Workers’ Activities, Ms. Inviolata Chinyangarara; a representative of the Director-General of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM); and representatives of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the donor partner supporting the workshop. Their presence underscored the significance of the event in promoting inclusive labour migration policies and strengthening trade union participation in governance processes across Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
The workshop is being coordinated by the NLC Focal Person on Labour Migration, Comrade Eustace James, whose leadership continues to drive the Congress’ commitment to advancing fair, safe, and rights-based labour migration governance.
Participants were drawn from NLC affiliate unions, state councils, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), ensuring broad representation and perspectives in the discussions.
Over the next three days, participants are expected to build capacity, share best practices, and develop actionable strategies that will contribute to improved labour migration frameworks, enhanced protection of migrant workers’ rights, and stronger trade union engagement at both national and regional levels.
