Oriire School Abduction: Federal Government Confirms Rescue of All Kidnapped Victims.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced that all the pupils, students and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire (Orire) Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom following a coordinated rescue operation by security agencies.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, when armed bandits invaded Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esiele, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area. More than 40 pupils, students and teachers were taken into captivity during the attack.
The incident sparked widespread concern across the country and prompted intensified rescue efforts by the Federal Government, Oyo State Government, security agencies and local vigilante groups. During the period of captivity, one of the abducted teachers was reportedly killed by the kidnappers, drawing condemnation from President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders.
According to Onanuga, the victims were freed after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
President Bola Tinubu commended the security agencies for their efforts and described the rescue as a major breakthrough in the fight against kidnapping and criminality. The successful operation has brought relief to families of the victims and residents of Oyo State who had anxiously awaited positive news since the abduction occurred.
The rescued pupils and teachers are expected to receive medical attention, counselling and rehabilitation support following their traumatic experience in captivity.
