This evening I sat in front of the farmhouse, watching my flock and just thinking about life in Nigeria.

It made me realize how much still needs to be done if we truly want our country to reach a place of comfort and proper development.

One thing that struck me is this: when people are sick, many of us prefer self-medication. Almost every Nigerian home has different drugs stocked for “just in case.” From paracetamol to antibiotics, and even local herbal mixtures, what the Yoruba call àgbò. Some families I know will never visit a hospital no matter how serious the illness is. The only time you see panic is during childbirth.

Yet when it comes to other important things like education, most people will never consider homeschooling their children. Even the poorest family will try to send their kids to a government school.

So I started asking myself a question:

If we trust ourselves enough to treat illnesses at home, something as sensitive as health, why don’t we apply that same mindset to other parts of life?
Why don’t we grow more of the food we eat?
Why don’t we build stronger systems within our homes and communities?

At the same time, shouldn’t we also normalize regular medical checkups and visits to government clinics? Prevention is always better than cure.

And before someone asks, “Where will the money come from?”, sometimes it’s about priorities too. The same money people can spend on subscriptions in a few days could go a long way toward basic healthcare.

Just a random evening thought while sitting with my birds.
