Becoming a professor without a Master’s or PhD isn’t unheard of. We’ve seen figures like Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka rise to that height — not through certificates, but through distinction, contribution, and intellectual excellence. Professorship, in its true sense, is earned through teaching, research, and impact — not self-declaration.

So when someone begins to describe themselves as a “Professor in Engineering,” we must understand the boundaries between metaphor and merit. Professorship isn’t a figure of speech. It’s not something one claims casually or metaphorically; it’s a status conferred after consistent academic engagement and tested knowledge.

If one has never lectured, supervised research, or contributed to scholarly discourse, then the title “Professor” becomes an exaggeration — a personal fantasy, not a professional achievement.

True professors don’t announce themselves; their works do. Their research speaks. Their legacy teaches. Professorship isn’t about political power, wealth, or self-projection. It’s about scholarship, mentorship, and substance.

Let’s respect the boundaries of academia. Words like Professor, Doctor, and Engineer carry weight because they represent years of study, practice, and contribution. When we begin to misuse them, we dilute the meaning of excellence.

Titles don’t make men great — character and competence do.

A painful tragedy has struck in Akwa Ibom, where a Nigerian Army officer, Lt. Samson Haruna, reportedly died after his wife allegedly set him on fire during a domestic dispute at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Abak LGA.

Lt. Haruna, who also served as a medical doctor with the 6 Battalion, was said to have had an argument with his wife, Mrs. Haruna, which sadly took a violent turn when she allegedly poured petrol on him and ignited it.

He was quickly taken to the Military Reference Section within the barracks and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, but unfortunately, he couldn’t survive the severe burns.

What a painful loss 💔
