UGU (FLUTED GOURD) VEGETABLE PLANT.

Fluted gourd/ pumpkin, popularly known as Ugu in igbo language with it's Binomial name as TELFAIRIA OCCIDENTAL, it is a tropical vine grown in the west Africa as a leaf vegetable and for it's edible protenious seed.
The fluted gourd(ugu) grows in many nation's of west Africa but is mainly cultivated in southeastern Nigeria and it's used primarily in soups and herbal medicines. Ugu is traditionally used by an estimated 30 - 36 million indigenous people in Nigeria, including the Efik, Ibibio, Urhobo and predominantly used by the igbo's. Ugu growing period begins in May and could last for the next 2 years with the help of irrigation when rain stops.
Seeds are dried for about 7 days and planted directly in the soil, the leave shoots can be harvested after a month of planting and can be collected every 3 - 5 weeks thereafter.
Benefits includes, leaves for vegetable soups, seeds can be boiled and eaten whole, highly protenious so some tribes use it for blood tonic, flour and fermented seeds for 'ogili'.
