IPSAW Protests at NAFDAC Headquarters, Demands Immediate Sack of DG Adeyeye
A civil society group, the Independent Public Service Accountability Watch (IPSAW), on Wednesday staged a protest at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) headquarters in Abuja, calling for the immediate removal of the agency's Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye.
The group accused the NAFDAC boss of gross incompetence and abuse of office over the agency’s enforcement of the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks and alcoholic beverages packaged in small PET bottles.
IPSAW alleged that the action contradicts existing government policies, resolutions of the House of Representatives, and directives aimed at protecting businesses and jobs within the sector.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, IPSAW Executive Director, Amb. Stephen Eriba, argued that the enforcement could negatively impact local manufacturers, threaten thousands of jobs, and encourage the proliferation of illicit and unregulated alcoholic products.
The group maintained that policy decisions affecting the industry should be based on empirical evidence and stakeholder engagement rather than what it described as arbitrary enforcement measures.
IPSAW further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the matter and review the leadership of the agency, insisting that the continued enforcement of the ban could have adverse economic consequences for businesses, workers, and consumers across the country.
The group called for urgent government action to address its concerns and ensure regulatory decisions align with national economic objectives.
