ARITHMETIC IS THE SIMPLEST SUBJECT

NOW THAT MOST SCHOOLS HAVE CLOSED FOR THE TERM… LET’S TALK ABOUT STAFF LATENESS BEFORE IT RUINS NEXT TERM.

As school owners and administrators, this break is the BEST time to reset expectations, restructure systems, and address lateness before the new term begins.

Here are REALISTIC and friendly strategies that actually work 👇👇

1️⃣ Create a Clear Resumption Policy (and share it early)

Many teachers genuinely don’t know what counts as “late.”
~Define:
~Arrival time
~Latest acceptable grace period
~Consequences for repeated lateness

Share it before resumption so no one says “I didn’t know.”

2️⃣ Use a Simple Attendance System That Works

Not every school needs biometric machines.
Try:
• A physical signing-in sheet
• Google Forms (for bigger schools)
• WhatsApp time-stamped check-in (for schools without front-desk staff)

Consistency is the key, not the method.

3️⃣ Address the REAL issues behind lateness

Some lateness is not laziness — it’s logistics.
Have honest conversations about:
🔸Traffic
🔸Transportation struggles
🔸Dropping children at school
🔸Distance from the school

Where possible, support staff with realistic solutions like:
~Carpool plans
~Adjusted morning duties
~Allowing early droppers for staff children

4️⃣ Set up a Rotational Duty Roster

Teachers run late when they feel “no one will notice.”
A simple roster for:
• Morning assembly
• Gate duty
• Class readiness checks

…creates structure and accountability.

5️⃣ Reward punctuality — don’t only punish lateness

This works in Nigeria more than we admit!
Try:
“Punctuality Star of the Month”✅
Small gifts✅
Airtime✅
Public acknowledgment✅

Good behaviour repeats when it’s recognised.✅

6️⃣ Hold a beginning-of-term staff meeting on TIME

Start the very first meeting at the exact minute.
No waiting for “latecomers.”
It sets the tone for the whole term.

7️⃣ Be consistent with consequences

Gentle reminders are fine, but repeated lateness needs action.
Use a progressive system:

a. Verbal warning

b. Written warning

c. Replacement of morning duties

d. Salary deduction (only if stated in contract)

e. Removal from sensitive duties

No surprises. No bias. Just fairness.🤗

8️⃣ Model the behaviour you want to see

If the school owner or admin strolls in late…
Teachers will copy it.
Leadership sets culture.

👉 The goal is not to police staff — it is to create a professional, respectful, and functional school environment.

Consistency + clarity + fairness = a punctual team.✌️
