Francis Galton, born in 1822 and passed away in 1911, is often referred to as "the father of psychometrics". He was a key figure in the development of the field of psychometrics, which focuses on the measurement of human abilities and characteristics. Galton was inspired by the work of his cousin, Charles Darwin, and his ideas about natural selection and human variation.

Galton introduced statistical methods for measuring intelligence and individual differences. He was particularly interested in intellectual functioning and developed a range of measures to assess this. These included tests of physical strength and swiftness, visual acuity, and memory of forms. He also developed a measure of the "co-relation" of two sets of scores, which was a precursor to the modern concept of correlation.

Galton's work laid the foundation for modern psychometrics, particularly the focus on human variation and the use of statistical methods to understand and measure this variation. His work has had a profound impact on the fields of psychology and education, among others.

Ability

The degree to which someone can carry out certain types of mental reasoning operations. It is often measured through ability tests, which are designed to measure either aptitude or achievement. While aptitudes are defined as inherent abilities for learning and raw talents, they are sometimes measured through a person's achievements.

The many types of ability tests include verbal, numeric, literacy and abstract reasoning tests.
