People need tools more than they need motivation.
As someone in addiction recovery, one thing I've come to deeply appreciate about the 12-Step Programme is that it offers practical tools to sustain long-term sobriety , not just motivational soundbites or self-help slogans.
For those unfamiliar, the 12-Step Programme was developed in the 1930s to help individuals recover from alcoholism. Since then, it has been adopted by many support groups, including Narcotics Anonymous.
The 12 steps are more than inspirational ideas, they provide structure and guidance to someone who feels powerless in the face of addiction. They offer tools to help a person accept their reality, take responsibility, seek healing, connect with a higher power, and begin rebuilding their life.
l use the 12-Step Programme here to illustrate a larger point: no amount of "You got this" or
"You have what it takes to build the life of your dreams" will help if people aren't equipped with the tools to actually do it.
It's like a car mechanic diagnosing a problem and then expecting the issue to resolve itself simply because they explained it to the car owner. Diagnosis alone changes nothing.
Tools and the skill to use them are what lead to repair.
This analogy applies across life. Standing on a stage in a fancy suit, delivering an inspiring speech, can awaken something in a person but if they leave the room without practical steps or tools to apply that inspiration, they'll likely end up back where they started once the motivational high wears off.
At Cornerstone Wellness Centre, our Aftercare & Follow-Up Program is here to support you apply these tools in early recovery and beyond, helping prevent relapse and achieve your goals.
Join us for weekly sessions to manage triggers, build resilience, and stay connected with your recovery journey. Remember, the first few months post-treatment are critical, and ongoing support can make all the difference.
Sobriety is your responsibility, take that step with us. 💝🫶🏿

Anxiety can manifest in various ways through a combination of physical, emotional, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms.
It’s important to note that everyone’s experience with anxiety is unique, and not everyone will exhibit the same symptoms.

Breaking a habit or stopping an addiction and staying stopped can take anywhere from a few weeks to many months.
Often this depends upon how ingrained, longstanding ( chronic) the addiction is.
90 days is a science informed time frame for meaningful change.
Scientific research strongly suggests it can take around 66 days on average to form a new habit or break an old one. Then there is the maintenance period to reinforce the new habit, lifestyle or behaviour.
The actual timescale will always vary depending on the person and the complexity of the habit.
This is why many rehab clinics have a standard stay of 90 days or 3 months. Some have 28 days though this is now widely recognised to be quite short - though aftercare and attendance at mutual support meetings after discharge can extend the time.
12 Step fellowships often suggest 90 meetings in 90 days to newcomers or anyone who has relapsed.
This may seem extreme though if we were using drugs or drinking daily, we might see it as a more reasonable suggestion. Many addicts find that they manage to get on track and stay on track by attending 90 consecutive meetings in 90 days.
Identify the behaviour or habit that we wish to change starts with clearly defining what it is exactly that we want to change.
We always need to be specific. Instead of "I want to quit procrastinating," we say "I need to stop checking my phone first thing in the morning."
Writing these goals down is crucial. On paper if possible. We don't need writing skills, or to be able to spell perfectly. We do need consistency and a plan.
