The star-shaped fort of São João was built on Ibo Island in 1791. The fort was built by Portuguese traders to protect their goods - which included gold, silver, ivory... and slaves. The fort was used to house slaves before they were “exported”. In later years, political prisoners were sent to this fort and most of them were tortured and murdered. We spoke to a survivor of this fort during our stay, we will post about it a little later - it is an incredibly sad and fascinating ordeal and this fort resonates with the horrors of its history. Today, the fort is home to the island's famous goldsmiths and cabinetmakers and the maritime museum.🇲🇿🇲🇿
