During my school time, 2D CAD already consider an advanced technology in engineering and AutoCAD is the market leader.
Then, during my university time, 3D CAD is much cooler and CATIA develop by Dassault was the king. Making 2D CAD software like AutoCAD an antique stuff.
Follow with advanced in computer technology, advanced tools like finite element, control system & multibody dynamics already available for the industry to use it. Later known as CAE, this tools allow engineer to determine the reliability of their design during design stage. However, it increase additional workload to the engineer to master multiple software in order to perform the analysis.
Just imagine if all these engineering tools are in the same softwre/environtment.
