Joint replacements, particularly at the hip, and bone fixation devices have become very successful applications of materials in medicine. The use of pins, plates, and screws for bone fixation to aid recovery of bone fractures has become routine, with the number of annual procedures approaching five million in the United States alone. In joint replacement, typical patients are age 55 or older and suffer from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or osteoporosis. Orthopedic surgeries for artificial joints exceed 1.5 million each year, with actual joint replacement accounting for about half of the procedures. A major focus of research is the development of new biomaterials for artificial joints intended for younger, more active patients.

1)The female structure. Women have increased joint and ligament mobility compared to men. In other words, women are more limber. This elasticity of the joints allows more movement and therefore greater risk for developing joint pain.
2)Estrogen. The female hormone, estrogen, plays a role in cartilage (the flexible tissue that makes up your joints) protection. When estrogen levels decrease, the amount of cushioning the cartilage provides also decreases. This is significant because the female body experiences estrogen decreases monthly during the menstrual cycle as well as during menopause.
3)Obesity. Although obesity is a factor for both men and women, women have a greater risk of obesity compared to men. Obesity increases the risk of joint pain due to higher levels of stress put on the joints. Studies show that every additional pound of body weight equals four pounds of weight in the knee.

-Acupuncture. This technique can help relieve musculoskeletal pain resulting from fibromyalgia by activating the body’s natural pain relief system and stimulating the nerves, muscles and connective tissue.
-Massage. An invigorating massage with warm essential oil can help joint pain as well as other conditions. The massage enhances blood flow, relaxes muscle tissue, and helps soothe inflammation. It also helps ease joint stiffness and increase the range of motion in individuals suffering from arthritis, fibromyalgia, and osteoporosis.
-Supplements. There is evidence that glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can help with joint pain and improve function. Both are components of healthy cartilage which cushion bones and protect the joints. These supplements may not work for everyone; however, they are safe to try and have no significant side effects.
-Tai chi and yoga. These low-impact activities can increase the range of motion while strengthening joints and surrounding muscle tissue. Tai chi can help improve range of motion and alleviate joint pain for people living with fibromyalgia and arthritis. The gentle stretches in yoga can help prevent and alleviate chronic soreness in the shoulders, hips, and knees.
