Although it hasn't been very successful thus far, Tesla hopes to compete in one of the largest auto markets.

The American business finally launched its first showroom in India, the fourth-largest market in the world, in July. However, according to dealership data cited by the BBC, the EV manufacturer sold just over 100 cars in just over two months of operation.

Only a small percentage of the slightly over 600 orders the business got for the Model Y, the only Tesla model that is officially available in India, had resulted in sales as of mid-September. This is true even when more costly vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and BYD reported high sales as a result of tax breaks.

In any case, Tesla opened the order books in July when its first "Experience Center" welcomed both customers and admirers in Mumbai, but it didn't begin shipping the Model Y to Indian consumers until September.

Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee told the BBC, "Their [sales] numbers are low by any standard." However, that seems strategic to me. In India, they have only recently entered the country. Additionally, they have a strong chance of boosting sales in the near future."

Recently, a larger center with a showroom, charging station, and after-sales services all under one roof opened in the northern city of Gurugam. Although this new site should increase brand awareness in India, Tesla still has a long way to go in terms of increasing sales.

To begin with, the Model Y available in the Indian market costs an astounding $70,000—luxury automobile money. Furthermore, there are just two Supercharger DC fast charging stations in the nation: one in New Delhi and one in Mumbai. Since the company intends to open more sites, this should alter in the future.

Due in large part to American customers who raced to take advantage of the expiring $7,500 federal tax credit, Tesla reported a decline in profitability earlier this year despite record third-quarter revenue and deliveries.
