When a progressive lens has a 0° pantoscopic tilt (meaning the lenses are perfectly vertical), it is generally detrimental to the wearer's vision.
​Here is why a 0° angle is problematic:
❗️​Narrowed Reading Zone: Progressive optics are designed for a lens that tilts inward at the bottom. At 0°, the distance between the eye and the lens increases as the wearer looks down, making the reading area feel small and difficult to find.
❗️​Blurred Vision: Light entering a vertical lens from a downward angle causes marginal astigmatism, reducing clarity in the near and intermediate zones.
❗️​Postural Strain: The wearer often has to tilt their chin up excessively to compensate for the lack of tilt, leading to neck discomfort.
❗️​Peripheral "Swim": The lens is not aligned with the eye's natural rotation, which can increase the "swaying" sensation in the periphery.
