Even though Google lists this place as a Nyonya restaurant, it is more of a Chinese-styled restaurant – in terms of food. There are a few Nyonya dishes, but most of the dishes are what you’d find in a zi-char restaurant.

When we walked in, we can’t say we were welcomed. Perhaps it was because there were some tables still, but it was a little difficult to discern if they were still accepting walk-ins and such. When we sat down, a pot of tea was placed on the table – this is also something we were not sure about as we did not order it (we were charged for it, and it would have been nice to be told about it before it was placed on our table). Maybe it is how things are done here in 1919 – all tables will have to have a pot of tea upon seating. The menu has quite a number of options, including desserts. The space itself was nice to look at – they have a lot of antiquated items where we were seating.

Items ordered:

- Crispy Fried Eggplant (a signature dish)
- Salted Egg Sotong
- Pineapple Fried Rice (a signature dish)
- Dry Chili Chicken
- 1919 Hot Coffee (their own version of Ipoh’s white coffee)

Ipoh Night Market is appealing at first glance – it is brightly lighted up and its space promises a lot of options for you to fill your tummy with. It is quite underwhelming for a night market this size – there are proper parking slots allocated, but it was not a busy enough place to make you have to worry about parking.

There are a huge number of stalls too – some open, some not. There are also plenty of seats. We came here twice during different times and well, perhaps night markets as a concept are not what the people of Ipoh are interested in. We did venture over to another night market and the turnout seemed to be even lesser. And before you tell us that it is our timing; it was a Friday night! Anyway, we did manage to try Suito – there were people continuously patronizing the pretty stall, and we had to try it too.

Now, this is a little confusing. It seems that durian season in Kedah is almost over, but there are ongoing promotions in Genting Highlands all the way into September. Penang too has durian related buffets and are still selling these thorny fruits. Either way, if you do find yourself in Kedah, there are a few places selling durians – mostly roadside stalls. Bercham Road is one such place where you can drive around and try to locate these stalls. Another place that hasn’t run out of the famed musang king yet is this fruit shop: SK Blue Sky Enterprise.
