I remember as a young kid, my sister had wrapped up a bday gift so nicely for me. It was giant candy shaped, with 2 power ranger masks forming a shell for a bunch of candy inside. It was glorious! I was beyond delighted.

As I unwrapped it, she turned and said to me ‘you know Mariah Carey is celebrating her birthday today too, right?’..

I recall pausing to process that revelation, that one of my favorite singers shares the same birthdate with me. I was over the moon and overjoyed as I loved her music dearly. But quietly inside, for a 10 year old, thay revelation was seismic - I dared say it felt like a validation of sorts.

I guess for my bday this year, I chose to look back on my musical journey and where it’s taken me thus far and traced it back to where it began. And it started there, from finding an album called ‘Daydream’ and not only enjoying the voice, the melodies weaved and how they were delivered but having sung along and ‘learned’ how to.
