What are Langerhans Cells?
Langerhans cells are a critical component of the skin's immune system. These specialized immune cells are located in the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) and act as the skin’s first line of defense against harmful external agents such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens.
Their primary role is to detect and capture foreign substances and alert the body's immune system to initiate a protective response.
In healthy skin, Langerhans cells maintain a strong immune defense, helping the skin resist external threats.
However, in sensitive skin, their function is often compromised, reducing the skin’s ability to ward off irritants and contributing to inflammation and sensitivity.
Why Does Skin Become Sensitive?
Sensitive skin often results from a weakened or damaged skin barrier.
Environmental factors such as pollution, UV exposure, extreme weather, and improper skincare routines can impair the barrier, leading to increased moisture loss and reduced defense mechanisms, which in turn trigger redness, irritation, and discomfort.
Furthermore, the compromised function of Langerhans cells in sensitive skin means the skin’s immune system becomes less effective, further exacerbating its vulnerability to external irritants.
