For El mundo mágico de los mayas Leonora Carrington did not start with a studio sketch
she started with months in Chiapas
staying with an anthropologist
drawing ceremonies she could not photograph
studying local animals
and watching how people relate to mountains
plants and time
The mural condenses all of that into one surface
Mayan cosmovision
her own surreal universe
and the thin line between myth and everyday life
Stories like this sit close to our heart at Tulum Art Club
when we invite artists to work in Tulum or Yucatán
we are not asking them to decorate a wall
we are inviting them to let the place rewrite their way of seeing.

Long before phones and fast tourism,
Stephens and Catherwood crossed the peninsula with notebooks, paper, and time.

The writer kept a travel diary.
The artist spent days and weeks drawing ruins in Uxmal, Chichén, and many other sites
so carefully that you can still feel the heat and the stone inside those lines.

For us at Tulum Art Club,
their journey is a reminder that art can be a way to arrive in a place,
not just to name it.

When we invite artists to work in Yucatán today,
we are asking for the same thing:
walk slowly,
look closely,
let the territory redraw your hand. 🌿

Our studio in Valladolid sits right in front of La Candelaria church.

Upstairs is the residency space a calm studio where artists work, rest and slowly weave Yucatán light into their pieces. Downstairs our gallery and restaurant open to the park, sharing that process with neighbors, friends and anyone passing through.

This spot is part of the circuit we offer to artists together with Tulum and the beach different energies, one same thread between art, land and community.
