🌍 Can a shipping container help clean our oceans?

The answer is yes! Thanks to the expertise of Velogic, the logistics arm of Rogers Group, a retired shipping container has been fully refurbished and customised for the Plastic Odyssey micro-factory, an initiative that turns plastic waste into valuable resources.

This innovative and impactful recycling unit will soon be operational in Bel Ombre, helping to support circular solutions in Mauritius.

Velogic’s support in implementing the Plastic Odyssey micro-factory reflects Rogers Group’s commitment to driving meaningful change through high-impact actions that promote environmental resilience.

🌍 Last week, Rogers Group participated in the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice. This global event brought together governments, businesses, scientists, academics and NGOs with a shared objective: to protect the ocean and accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 14 – Life Below Water.

The Group was represented by Mickaël Apaya, Head of Climate Resilience and Regeneration at Rogers; Flavio Joseph, Sustainable Development Executive at Heritage Resorts & Golf; and Pourani Chinapian, Marine Research and Outreach Coordinator at the Heritage Marine Education Centre. Together, they brought a Mauritian and regional perspective to the global conversation on ocean sustainability.

Reflecting on his participation, Mickaël Apaya quoted a statement from one of the scientists, which resonated strongly with him:

“Where science provides clarity, lead with courage. Where uncertainty persists, act with humility. And always, we must remember there can be no stewardship without knowledge.”

At Rogers, our commitment to ocean health is anchored in tangible, place-based action. In Bel Ombre, initiatives such as the Jacotet Bay river regeneration illustrate this approach. Through the use of GIS, drone mapping and eDNA, we are implementing science-led methods to support the restoration of coastal ecosystems.

UNOC3 marked a historic milestone in ocean governance: the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) was ratified by over 60 countries, including Mauritius, a decisive step towards safeguarding global marine biodiversity conservation. 🌊

We are proud to count 7 team members across ENL and Rogers Groups as certified facilitators of 'La Fresque de la Biodiversité', a globally recognised, science-based workshop that raises awareness and drives action to protect biodiversity. With their support, Mauritius now has 17 trained facilitators ready to lead engaging and impactful sessions. 🌱

As part of the awareness component of our Regenesis programme, our colleagues have been empowered to lead biodiversity workshops across our subsidiaries and beyond, facilitating meaningful conversations about biodiversity and encouraging collective responsibility. 🤝

Regenesis is part of Varuna Biodiversité programme, led by Expertise France and funded by the AFD - Agence Française de Développement, and reflects the biodiversity focus of our Sustainability & Inclusive Development strategy.
