Merill Rural Network
Merill brings together a number of farmers, breeders and artisans. Through this network, tourists and locals have the opportunity to experience the Maltese Islands' beautiful rural areas and consume genuine local products. Our mission is to nurture families who provide alternative experiences for locals and tourists. These contribute directly towards the conservation of the environment and empowerment of the rural communities.

📍Inside GreenFit’s Pilot Regions: Spotlight on Malta!
Malta’s rich rural landscape is deeply rooted in farming, craftsmanship, and culinary heritage, creating a strong foundation for sustainable agricultural growth. With the contribution of Merill Rural Network and Malta Youth in Agriculture, we engage farmers from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and production systems, from traditional practices to innovative, sustainable approaches.
🌱What’s Happening in Malta’s Farms?
Malta’s farms are mostly very small, with low economies of scale, making it difficult for farmers to invest in modern equipment or digital tools. An ageing, largely part-time farming community, combined with low digital literacy and limited awareness of available technologies, further slows adoption. Fragmented policies, limited local research and practical demonstrations, and restricted access to suppliers and after-sales support compound these difficulties.
To support farmers facing these challenges, GreenFit focuses on awareness-raising, skills development, practical demonstrations, and policy dialogue, driving the adoption of climate-smart, sustainable solutions in Malta.

The new Merill (r)evolution is already underway!
After 15 years of nurturing and promoting our members, many of them are being sought directly by tourists, local companies and even public institutions.
That is how long it takes to empower the rural community... a good number of members are ready to take the leap. Some are still starting the Merill journey, while others do not yet know or refuse to accept that tourism can be a very positive and beneficial force if conducted in a sustainable way. Ironically, these are the best potential future Merill members.
In the coming weeks we'll be sharing more about this development which is partly supported by Malta Tourism Authority's project Cross-Re-Tour
In the meantime, enjoy this short clip of the guys at Falzon Bakery - Rabat... doing what they love most: Preparing freshly baked bread and sweets while sharing their passion with guests from all over the globe.
