I’m glad I didn’t miss FHRD’s conference at the beautiful Xara Lodge last Friday 🌾

A fascinating legal shift is unfolding across Europe. The principle is beautifully simple: equal work deserves equal pay. It should have always been this way, is a no brainer. But it hasn’t - hence the EU Pay Transparency Directive.

Behind that simplicity sits a new level of structure:
• clear job categories
• transparent pay frameworks
• evidence-based decisions
• employee representation in larger organisations

And then there is AI: used well, it can highlight anomalies, reduce bias and give HR and leadership clearer insights. But if a model cannot explain how it reached a conclusion, fairness will rightly be questioned.

My favourite takeaway from the stellar professional panel: technology can guide us, but humanity and accountability remain ours.

Tools like JET (Shireburn’s new Job Evaluation Tool) are making complex processes and role structures, far more practical and accessible. I found the presentation empowering, without drama but with enough take aways to create solid direction. Just a thoughtful and well-supported move towards fairer, more transparent workplaces - a brilliant and easy to use plug-in away.

And where does it leave HR Leadership? Right where it has always belonged - at the heart of better business decisions.

Some evenings run longer than planned! The kind where ideas flow and you realise how lucky you are to do what you do. ✍️

So my daughter overheard me on a call today: "Wait... do you make people gamble? I heard you promote gambling?" I said, “Yes. Life is a gamble. The game has always been there. I help the right people find the best lifestyle gamble: the kind where you wake up excited to work. And firstly, I help amazing leaders build teams that work as hard as they play. Is that so bad?”

Because your quiet joy during meaningful work counts just as much as your bliss outside of it. So yes, remember you can swim out to your dreams too ✨

Happy Friday from poolside props HQ 💦 This week’s office?

A non-glamorous national swimming pool cafeteria with echoey acoustics and coffee that’s more functional than fancy. While I ramble and juggle work, my daughter is upside down in the water. Literally. Her team are competing with athletes from 18 countries. Go team Malta 🇲🇹🙌

Fun-fact: synchronised (ultra-strength) swimming, is basically dancing combined with buoyant gymnastics and breath-holding all at once. + In perfect harmony with others. It’s a seriously tough, beautiful, and wildly under-appreciated sport. Just like a lot of what goes on behind the scenes in life and work, I am completely in awe of how easy they must make it look on the surface. Their acrobatics performed without lift off from firm grounds, put simply - while floating, lifting their own body weight and negotiating basic breathing with every artistic move. These are some badass athletes 💪🏻

This week I’ve been stretched, torn, and deeply caffeinated ☕. I’ve missed my other daughter and carved out quiet corners to show up for work. When I look at Mia, full of grit, silent grace, and bubbles, I am reminded why it’s all worth it.

Go Mia. You’re already gold to me 🌟
