HOW LONGITUDE, LATITUDE AND TIME ZONES WORKS Latitude: These are horizontal lines that run east–west, measuring how far north or south a place is from the Equator (0°). Longitude: These are vertical lines that run north–south, measuring how far east or west a place is from the Prime Meridian (0°). Time Zones: Because the Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, it is divided into 24 time zones. Each zone generally covers 15° of longitude, meaning local time changes by 1 hour for every 15° east or west of the Prime Meridian.
