ဒီတစ္ေခါက္ ေက်ာင္းပိတ္ရက္အတြင္း ရက္သတၱတစ္ပတ္ေလာက္ႀကာမွ် စကၤာပူ Raffles Junior College မွာ ေက်ာင္းတက္ေနတဲ့ အငယ္ဆံုးသမီးေလးဟာ အိမ္ကို ခဏျပန္လာပါတယ္။
ျပန္လာျပီး အေဖဆီကို ခြင့္ေတာင္းပါတယ္။ သူ USA, California က Berkeley City College ကို ၀င္ခြင့္ေလွ်ာက္ခ်င္ပါတယ္တဲ့။ ကြ်န္ေတာ္ ဘာေျပာရမလည္း။ အမွန္ကေတာ့ ဒါမ်ိဳးေတြကို မိဘကေတာင္ဦးေဆာင္လုပ္ေပးရမွာေလ။

အခုေတာ့ သူ႕အသိေလးနဲ႕သူ၊ နားႀကီးပါးႀကီး ေက်ာင္းမွာတက္ေနရေတာ့ အေကာင္းတကာ ့ အေကာင္း ေတြကို ေတာင္းဆိုလာျပီေပါ့ဗ်ာ။ Aim Higher ဆိုတဲ့ ကြ်န္ေတာ္ႏွစ္သက္တဲ့ စိတ္ဓါတ္ေပါ့ဗ်ာ။
ဒါေပမယ့္ ကြ်န္ေတာ္က အိုျပီေလ။ စီးပြားေရးသမား မဟုတ္ခဲ့ေလေတာ့ ႏႈတ္ကေတာ့ ဆြံ႕ျပီေပါ့ဗ်ာ။ "ေအး ေလ်ွ်ာက္ႀကည္႕ေပါ့ သမီးရယ္" လို႕ဘဲ မီးစင္ႀကည္႕ကရေတာ့မွာဘဲလို႕ အေတြးနဲ႕ဘဲ မေရမရာ ျပန္ေျပာခဲ့ရပါတယ္။ ဒီမွာ သမီးေလးက သူ႕ဟာသူ ေက်ာင္း၀င္ခြင့္ ပံုစံေတြရွာျဖည္႕ျပီးေလွ်ာက္ေတာ့ (၂)ပတ္ေလာက္အႀကာမွာ ေက်ာင္းက ၀င္ခြင့္ရတယ္ဗ်။
ေက်ာင္းက ထိပ္တန္းေက်ာင္းဗ်။ ဒီေက်ာင္းထြက္ေတြထဲက ႏိုဗယ္လ္ဆု ရတဲ့သူခ်ည္႕ (၅)ဦးရွိတယ္ဗ်။

အဲဒီမွာ ေက်ာင္း၀င္ခြင့္ေလွ်ာက္ရာမွာ လိုအပ္ခ်က္ တစ္ခုအေနနဲ႕ Personal Essay တစ္ေစာင္ေရးေပးရတယ္တဲ့ဗ်။ သူေရးေပးခဲ့ရတယ္ဆိုတ့ဲ Essay ေလးကို ကြ်န္ေတာ္ဖတ္လိုက္ရေတာ့ ကြ်န္ေတာ့ပါးစပ္အေဟာင္းသားနဲ႕ျဖစ္သြားရပါတယ္။ ရင္ေတြခုန္လာလိုက္တာ ညက အိပ္လို႕လည္းမရေတာ့ဘူး။ အရန္သင့္ေဆာင္ထား တဲ့ ေအာက္ဆီဂ်င္ဘူး ကိုေတာင္ မနက္(၄)နာရီေလာက္ႀကီးးထရွဴ ခဲ့ရပါတယ္ဗ်ာ။

ကြ်န္ေတာ္ မ်က္ရည္ေတြလည္လာေအာင္အထိ ေရးထားခဲ့တဲ့ ကြ်န္ေတာ့သမီးေလးရဲ႕ Personal Essay ကုိ ဖတ္ႀကည္႕ႀကပါဦးဗ်ာ။ ဒီစာကိုဖတ္ျပီးေတာ့ဒီသမီးေလးရဲ႕ ျမင့္မားျပီးျပင္းျပလွတဲ့ဆႏၵ ကို မျဖည္႕ဆည္းနိုင္ခဲ့ရင္ ကြ်န္ေတာ္ဟာ သားသမီးေတြကို အေမြ မေပးနို္င္ခဲ့တဲ့ တာ၀န္မေႀကတဲ့ အေဖ ျဖစ္ေတာ့မယ္။

Personal Essay

As the presentation reaches its conclusion, I turned away from the slides to glance at the audience's reaction, a habit after the third time or so I accompanied my father to his talks on Climate Change. Despite the familiarity of the contents, the visage of shock and horror in response to the morbid photographs and somber facts and figures never changes and is something I can still empathize with. I expected it to be no different at this event either. Yet, when I whirled around, I was met instead with knowing nods, and varying shades of uncertainty- but no rude awakening there.

My initial surprise and confusion gave way to my own small epiphany – this audience was different from the usual city-dwellers. These people did not perceive this information on the very present shadow cast by global warming on our society as a nightmare – they are afraid, yes, but will soon wake up from it to go on living about their own daily activities. For the farmers and villagers making up this audience, these statistics are reflections of what they are already experiencing . The irregular weather, droughts and dried up crops that leave them with empty plates on the table are their lives.

Yet bewilderment persists even with this information. They do not understand what they are supposed to do in return. Solutions like be updated about the weather are lost to these people who are stuck in the rural parts of the country, cut off from electricity, education and technology, without appropriate provisions given to them. And this is the crux of the problem – the people who are affected the worst by climate change do not have the abilities and means to fight or adapt to it, yet those who do simply so not care enough because they are not the ones suffering the most first-hand.

I want to change this by furthering my studies at the Peralta College District. By honing myself to the best of my capabilities in the field of the people and his environment, I want to be able to even out this imbalance and support those who need it with what I can do. As it clichéd as it sounds, climate change isn't something that affects the fringes of society – it affects all of us. It all sounds terribly idealistic, but I beg to differ. I believe it is as realistic and logical as it can be. We contributed to global warming , we suffer its consequences and likewise, I believe we have the ability and duty to make it better.

The United State's national anthem sings of America as the land of the free and the home of the brave. I'd like to inculcate bravery within me as well, for all my talk, to empower and free those in need from fear to a force they can and are able to fight against.
