🛡️ SOLAS: The Foundation of Maritime Safety

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is the most important international maritime safety treaty. Established in 1914 and continuously updated, SOLAS sets minimum safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operations to protect crew and cargo.

**Key SOLAS Requirements:**

SOLAS mandates comprehensive fire safety systems, including detection, suppression, and evacuation procedures. Lifeboats and life rafts must accommodate 125% of all persons aboard. Regular drills and training ensure crew competency in emergency procedures. Structural integrity, watertight compartments, and stability calculations are rigorously enforced.

**Safety Equipment Standards:**

All vessels must carry approved life jackets, life rings, emergency beacons (EPIRBs), and communication systems. Fire-fighting equipment must be strategically positioned and regularly maintained. Navigation equipment, including radar and electronic chart displays, must meet SOLAS specifications.

**Crew Training & Certification:**

**Inspection & Certification:**

Flag state authorities conduct periodic surveys to verify SOLAS compliance. Deficiencies must be rectified promptly. Port state control inspections add another layer of oversight, ensuring international standards are maintained.
